   Proposal Description:
   The aim is to do a Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) of Years of Education as an intervention to prevent or slow down the onset of Alzheimer???s Disease (or Dementia generally). A national average cost of a year of education will be used to measure the costs of the intervention. For the benefits I am going to use two sets of outcome variables that exist in the NACC data set.       One set of outcome variables relates to the total GDS score or two of the components (Q1 on life satisfaction, and Q6 on happiness from form B6). These outcomes are proxy measures for Quality of Life (QoL).  Multiplying the life expectancy of a person with AD by the QoL contribution from a year???s education will produce the number of Quality of Life Years (QALYs) from the education. From the CBA literature I am going to take the price of a QALY and multiply this by the number of QALYs to produce an estimate of the benefits of education.       The second set of outcome variables relates to the living arrangements of the person (Q???s 15 -17 on form A5). The idea is that some forms of residence (especially skilled nursing homes) are more costly than others. By years of education preventing, or slowing down AD, there will be some cost savings and these are the benefits of education. I will use a national average cost per year in a skilled nursing home to measure the cost savings.     To summarize: I am firstly going to use the NACC data to estimate the effectiveness of years of education for slowing down or reducing AD, and then secondly estimate the effect of AD on QALYs or the location of resident of the person. Values for education and values for the outcomes are going to be taken from the literature.     Two equations will be estimated. One will regress AD on education and other variables, including: age, hereditary factors (APOE and siblings with AD), life style (smoking, alcohol), demographic variables (race, gender, marriage) and medications (single source).
